Wardlaw Building

Work Completed: 1999

The Project: Part of the University Hall group of buildings, The Wardlaw is a listed building acquired by the University of Edinburgh in 1947 for use as a student Hall of Residence – and today it still houses St Andrews students.

In 1999, with dangerously crumbling stonework providing a cause for concern to university authorities, FA Sweeney was selected to restore and repair much of the stonework, whilst still allowing the building to function as a busy student hall.

Our Solution: Before the work began, we completed various risk assessments and CDM protocols In order to comply with the University’s extensive Health & Safety criteria. We then designed and built a temporary safety framework and scaffold to enable the building to continue to be used during our work.

Initially we collaborated closely with a structural engineer: we worked together to calculate vertical and horizontal load-bearing which was a crucial part of the project.

Each of the new stone mullions we made measured 3.5 metres, and were precisely designed to support a weight of 22 tonnes. Other elements of the project included general stone repairs and restoration, ensuring the longevity of this well-loved university building.
